Toa Payoh Sports Hall, Saturday, May 24, 2014 — A strong first quarter allowed Hwa Chong Institution (HCI) to breeze past St. Andrew’s Junior College (SAJC) 60–34 to clinch third place in the A Division Netball Championship.

HCI finished runners-up last year, while SAJC emulated their result from 2013.

The game was evenly matched early on. SAJC had a couple of interceptions, but were unable to convert. HCI were able to work the ball into the final third, giving easy shots to their Goal Shooter. Shaky passing from SAJC allowed HCI to intercept them, which they capitalised by scoring on the other end. This gave HCI an 11-point lead at the end of the period.

SAJC played catch up from that point, as they looked to trim the deficit. HCI’s players were doing well to run into space, opening up their offence in the final third. Their Goal Shooter and Goal Attack shot well to finish off their plays.

By the third quarter, HCI built up a huge 24-point lead. SAJC’s passing woes continued throughout the game, as HCI’s Wing Defence and Goal Defence forced a lot of turnovers.

The final quarter was a more even affair, but HCI did well to close out the game. Their Goal Shooter and Goal Attack worked well in tandem in their attacking third. Each time one player missed, the other would rebound and take the shot. SAJC’s Goal Shooter also had a good show in this quarter, making most of her shots when she had the opportunity. HCI eventually took the game 60–34, taking third place in the championship.

HCI captain Claudia Tan, said, “I am very proud of my team an we played a really good game today. We improved on our previous performance as we showed much more composure today. I would like to thank our coaches, teachers-in-charge, Auntie Lynn and all our supporters for their contributions throughout the season.”

SAJC captain, Joie Seow, said, “I think it was a good way to end off our season. We fought hard throughout and did not give up. I want to thank Mrs Lee and our supporters for coming down to watch us. Also kudos to HCI for a good fight today.”
