Republic Polytechnic, Wednesday, May 14, 2014 — Raffles Instution (RI) continued their winning streak by beating Hwa Chong Institution (HCI) 56–45 in the National A Division Netball Championship.
Despite the loss, HCI, who were previously unbeaten, advanced to the semi-finals with HCI.
A series of accurate passes helped RI to a strong start, as they led at 7–2 at one point. The height of the RI GS, coupled with several good passes over long distances, saw RI end the first quarter leading 16–12.
HCI fought hard to close the gap to two points (17–19) but RI pulled away to lead by 10 points (32–22) at the end of the second quarter.
In the third quarter, RI saw their lead reduced to eight (32–24) but they were never seriously threatened and led by 14 points (47–33) heading into the final quarter.
In the final quarter, HCI at one point scored five consecutive points but RI maintained their lead to win the game 56–45.
RI Captain, Merissa, said, “We made a lot of mistakes in the first quarter. In the second quarter we came back on, and we really fought all the way. In the last quarter it was a bit unsteady again. But overall I think it was a good buildup from the past games. We’ve been improving consistently all the way, until this game. I hope we can play a more consistent game for all four quarters. To maintain our cool, and to keep our heads up throughout the game no matter what happens.”
HCI Captain, Claudia, said, “I think we definitely could have done a lot better, because a lot of mistakes were made on our part. Now we have to look ahead and prepare for our semis.”
