Bedok Green Secondary School, Monday, May 12, 2014 — River Valley High School (RVHS) advanced to the final of the National A Division Softball Championship after a 2–1 victory over Anglo-Chinese Junior College (ACJC).
ACJC came out strong in the first inning with Jolyn Ho (ACJC #12) placing down a safety bunt and then coming around to score to gave ACJC a one-run lead. They went on to hold RVHS hitless in the first inning.
RVHS picked up an easy three up, three down on ACJC in the second inning. Jia Hui (RVHS #24) hit a triple to start off the inning. She then scored on a double by Isabelle (RVHS #1) to tie the game at one apiece.
Deborah Lek (ACJC #18) hit a triple to start off the fourth inning. In an attempt to score another run, Rissa Ho (ACJC #21) placed down a bunt but Deborah Lek (ACJC #18) was unable to score.
With runners on the corners and only one out after RVHS gave up a walk to Sheryl Chua (ACJC #20), ACJC had the opportunity to take the lead. However RVHS were able to pick up two consecutive outs to leave the ACJC runners stranded.
Capitalising on an error that allowed Naomi (RVHS #13) to get on base, RVHS took the lead with Isabelle (RVHS #1) scoring Naomi (RVHS #13) on a double.
Down to their last three outs, ACJC managed to get Whang Iwen (ACJC #10) safe on base. She then made it to third base on a couple of dead balls. However, ACJC could not bring her home and RVHS held on for the eventual 2–1 victory.
RVHS captain, Vivian (#33), said, “Both teams performed well. I’m glad that we won and that we are through to the final.”
ACJC captain, Sheryl Chua (#20), said, “We haven’t learnt our mistakes from previous games but we tried to fight on. We’ll come back next year more aggressive, and as a better team.”
ACJC finished the season in third place while RVHS will face Victoria Junior College in the final. The game will be played at 3 p.m. on May 12 at Bedok Green Secondary.
