Kallang Tennis Centre, Wednesday, May 7, 2014 — Raffles Institution (RI) defeated Anglo-Chinese School (Independent) [ACS(I)] 3–2 to take home the National A Division Tennis Championship title for the sixth consecutive year.

In 2013, RI completed the tournament without conceding a single match and defeated ACS(I) 5–0 in the finals.

RI’s victory was only determined in the first doubles match, which pit RI’s Basir Koh and Christopher Wu against Yeo Ee Jin and Imran of ACS(I). The RI pair conceded the first set 1–6, but eventually put up a strong fight to take the next two sets with scores of 7–5 and 6–3 respectively.

Basir, who is also RI’s captain, commented, “The first set was really bad but we told ourselves never to give up. Luckily we managed to get the second set, which was a morale booster for us. The third set was just for us to lose. I think overall, we did very well. We held our nerves when it was crucial and when the pressure was immense. I’m very proud of everyone for handling everything so well.”

“It’s a great feeling. We didn’t think about defending out title today and we just came in to play. It’s definitely great for us to get the title six times in a row. I want to thank the coaches and teachers for bringing us here and our parents for supporting us all the way. The supporters were just amazing. Last but not least, I want to thank my whole team. They were always behind each other and that was what made the journey so memorable,” added the second-year RI student.

Anglo-Chinese Junior College finished the tournament in third place while St. Andrew’s Junior College were fourth.
