Clementi Sports Hall, Wednesday, March 9, 2014 — Singapore Chinese Girls’ School (SCGS) posted a 43–23 win over Deyi Secondary (DYS) in the second round of the National B Division Girls Basketball Championship.
Charmaine Koh (SCGS #13) led all scorers with 15 points, while Leona Ng (DYS #5) followed closely behind with 14 points.
The win puts SCGS joint-top of Group X along with Yishun Town Secondary. Both teams now sport 1–0 win–loss records.
SCGS took the early lead in the first quarter. Their full court press was effective in forcing turnovers from the Deyi players.
The second quarter was a tight defensive battle. Both teams found trouble making their jumpers on offence. SCGS took a 14–8 lead into the half-time break.
The third quarter saw SCGS extend the lead. Charmaine (SCGS #13) was instrumental in the run, totalling eight points in the period. Deyi struggled to bring the ball up the court in this period. SCGS’s defence proved too much for them.
In the final quarter, the lead was big enough such that SCGS could afford to settle down a little. They were able to seal the 43–23 win, putting them one step closer to the semi-final. They next play Yishun Town on Monday, April 14 at Clementi Sports Hall at 4pm. Deyi take on Anderson Secondary at the same time on the adjacent court.
SCGS top scorer, Charmaine Koh (#13), said, “It wasn’t really expected as our start was not as good. We see everyone in the group as a challenge and we will slowly work towards our goal. We have to work harder on defence and try to be more calm.”
