Clementi Sports Hall, Wednesday, March 9, 2014 — Yishun Town Secondary (YTS) took out Anderson Secondary (AND) 30–23 in the second round of the National B Division Girls Basketball Championship. Lai Mei Zhen (YTS #10) had a game-high eight points, while Syirin (AND #9) had seven points to pace her team.
The win gives Yishun Town a 1–0 win–loss record in Group X. Yishun now top the group along with Singapore Chinese Girls’ School (SCGS).
Anderson started the game off well defensively. Choo Jieying (AND #4) and Annkatrin Krieger (AND #12) sealed the paint with their length, not allowing Yishun Town to drive in during half-court sets. However, Yishun Town were able to force turnovers on defence. This allowed them to take a slim 7–2 lead at the end of the quarter.
The second quarter saw Anderson struggle offensively, putting up only two points on the board. Yishun Town were able to extend the lead by making easy baskets.
Both teams went through a scoring drought in the third quarter. There was only one made free throw by Anderson in the first five minutes of play. Towards the end of the period, Yishun Town found their groove.
Anderson mounted a minor comeback in the final quarter, trimming the deficit to as close as four points. Despite this, Yishun Town were able to hang on for the 30–23 win. Yishun Town will next play SCGS on Monday, April 14 at Clementi Sports Hall at 4pm. Anderson take on Deyi Secondary at the same time on the adjacent court
YTS captain, Nicole Beh (#8), said, “We played better than our previous games. Our defence was more aggressive and that was what sealed our win. I think SCGS would be our biggest threat in the group. We have not seen them play this year, so it will be a tough match in my opinion.”
YTS top scorer, Mei Zhen (#10), added, “We will work even harder against the better teams.”
