Singapore Basketball Centre, Wednesday, April 9, 2014 — Temasek Junior College (TJC) hung on to their 3-point lead in the final seconds to defeat Catholic Junior College (CJC) 30–27 in their first game of the National A Division Boys Basketball Championship.

Wang Gan Wei (TJC #13) led his team with eight points, while Leonard Choi (CJC #11) registered a game-high 13 points.

In the first half of the game, TJC had a few good runs but failed to convert their chances at the basket. Ng Ying Jie (TJC #7) and Wang Gan Wei (TJC #13) secured several rebounds but the team did not manage to make good use of the chances. On the other hand, (CJC #7) led his team’s offensive plays, going on strong drives and dishing out well-placed passes to his teammates. He paced his team with six points in the first half.

TJC led 17–13 going into the halftime break.

In the third quarter, both teams squandered their offensive opportunities and struggled to find the net with their shots. TJC went on to lead 21–15 with four free throws. TJC and CJC stepped up towards the end of the quarter to score on fast breaks, bringing the scores to 26–21.

TJC fumbled in the final quarter and made several mis-passes. Six minutes into the game, TJC scored on two offensive rebounds to lead 30–21, and failed to find the range with their shots thereafter.

Led by Jason Yip (CJC #7) and Leonard Choi (CJC #11), CJC started to play their offensive game, capitalizing on fast breaks to trail only by three points (27–30) with thirty seconds left. Faced with pressure from their defenders, CJC’s final desperation shot at the buzzer missed its mark, failing to bring the game to an overtime. TJC managed to hold on to their lead with their defence and won 30–27.

CJC player, Leonard (#11) said, “I think we didn’t give up. We tried our best and did our defence well. We have much to improve on. I just hope that everyone doesn’t give up and play their match.”
