Singapore Basketball Centre, Wednesday, April 9, 2014 — Raffles Institution (RI) dominated Temasek Junior College (TJC) with impressive offensive plays to beat them 77–8 in the opener of the National A Division Girls Basketball Championship.
Woon Wei Jing (RI #12) scored a game-high 15 points, while Bertha Lim (TJC #9) had seven points.
An early scoring outburst from fast breaks put RI 21–0 up, giving themselves breathing room over TJC in the first quarter. Bertha Lim (TJC #9) drilled the wide open three to make the first mark on the scoresheet for her team. RI scored on their final possession to lead 23–3 at the end of the quarter.
For the rest of the game, RI dominated with their offensive plays, sometimes finding Isabel Wong (#13) and Alethea Ng (#14) with the ball in the paint, where the duo would then close the loop with well-executed post moves. They totalled 14 points in the game. Most of the time, RI ran fast breaks after intercepting TJC’s passes to score easy points.
Bertha Lim (TJC #9) was the only scorer for her team, until Anna Ng (#8) added one with a freethrow conversion. RI then beat TJC 77–8 in their opening game of the season to secure their first win.
RI captain, Farah (#4) said, “I think we kind of slowed down a little. We didn’t really go all out today as it’s our first game and we were a bit nervous. My teammates really worked well together. Attacking wise, I think the flow was there. But I think that with stronger opponents, it might not be this easy. Honestly we do not know what’s the standard like this year, so we will just see how it goes.”
TJC captain, Anna (#8) said, “We are not a very experienced team, with many of us not having a basketball background. So I think we did okay today.”
