Clementi Sports Hall, Thursday, April 3, 2014 — Anderson Secondary booked a place in the second round with a 45–37 win over Zhonghua Secondary in the National B Division Girls Basketball Championship. Choo Jie Ying (AND #4) led all scorers with 15 points, while Lydia Ong (ZHS #5) followed closely behind with 13 points.

The win puts Anderson second in Group P with a 2–1 win–loss record. With third-placed Anglican High going down to Nanyang Girls’ High School 21–34 in the other game, this means that Anderson have qualified for the next round.

Jie Ying (AND #4) made her presence felt early on, as she use her height to prevent Zhonghua from attempting runners in the restricted area. Despite this, Zhonghua’s dominance on the offensive boards made the difference. They were able to take advantage of it to take a slim two-point lead.

The second quarter saw Lydia (ZHS #5) carry her team’s offence. She had six points in the period to pace her team. Towards the end, Anderson finally found their footing and they were able to shut Zhonghua down offensively.

In the second half, Jie Ying started to become more dominant on the boards. Zhonghua could not find an answer to stop her. This allowed her to snag a lot of rebounds, which gave her team more offensive opportunities.

Zhonghua came back strong to tie the game at 36 in the fourth quarter. Chiang Wen Hsin (ZHS #10) helped to cut the deficit, scoring seven straight points for her team at one point. However, from this point on, the baskets dried up for Zhonghua. Anderson went on a 9–0 run, fueled by good play from Jie Ying (AND #4) and Yan Wen (AND #7). They eventually finished the game with a 45–37 victory, punching their ticket to the second round.

Anderson captain, Annkatrin Krieger (#12), said, “We kept working together as a team, regardless whether it was our last game or not. We drove into the paint more and our defence was solid. We are nervous about the second round. We will try to enjoy ourselves and play as a team.”
