Physical and Sports Education Branch, Tuesday, April 1, 2014 — Jurong Secondary defeated Evergreen Secondary 22–7 in the bowl final of the National B Division Boys Rugby Championship.

Leading up to the final, both Jurong and Evergreen remained undefeated and had each won five games consecutively.

Jurong were beaten in the final last year, while this was Evergreen’s first time playing in the bowl final.

Evergreen scored the first try of the game. Mohamad Shafik (#11) was running towards the goal line with the ball when he found himself surrounded by the Jurong defenders. He then passed the ball sideways to Aqiil B Hasbullah (#10) who ran past his defenders to score the opening try. Muhammad Ariffin (#8) followed up with a conversion to put Evergreen 7–0 up.

Shortly after, Md Irfan (#13) of Jurong went ahead of his defenders to score the first try for his team. Jeremy Tey (#9) then converted to draw even with Evergreen (7–7).

Just before the first half ended, Irfan (#13) scored another try for Jurong. There were three defenders within reach but they could not get to him in time to tackle. Jeremy (#9) failed to convert this time (12–7).

In Jurong’s last offensive play before halftime, Muhammad Anis (#10) overcame his defenders with a good run, but Evergreen tacklers brought him down near the goal line. With that, Jurong took on a five-point lead going into the break (12–7).

In the second half, Jurong were awarded a penalty and converted successfully to lead 15–10.

On the other hand, Evergreen secured a lot more possession but were unable to convert offensively.

Towards the end of the game, Irfan (Jurong #13) scored his third try of the game to lower Evergreen’s morale. Muhammad Anis (#10) converted for a 15-point Jurong lead (22–7).

Jurong won the final line-out to deny Evergreen the possession and win 22–7 to clinch the bowl title.

However, Jurong will not return to defend their title as their rugby CCA (Co-Curricular Activity) will close down next year. However, they ended their season on a high, after winning six games straight to secure the title.

Evergreen captain, Aqiil (#10), said, “Today’s game is kind of emotional for us, as we’ve never made it to finals before. It’s our best experience so far. Although we lost, we’ve had the best rugby game so far. I love my team for the perseverance and the way we believe in ourselves to continue fighting. Jurong is obviously the stronger team in this year’s bowl. They are really good and have given us the best game. It’s their last year of rugby CCA anyway, so I think they’ve ended off in the best way ever.”

Jurong captain, Md Syafiq (#15), said, “I think it’s brilliant definitely because we won this game. I think the commitment that the boys had put in is hard rock solid and we deserve the championship. It was a great season as we are undefeated. We’ve won all five games before this and have ended the season on a very high note. It’s also the last year of the rugby CCA.”
