Clementi Sports Hall, Thursday, March 26, 2014 — Unity Secondary (USS) beat Ahmad Ibrahim Secondary (AIS) 66–24 in the first round of the National B Division Girls Basketball Championship. Priscilla Wong (USS #5) led all scorers with 15 points, while Koh Hui Ling (AIS #7) chipped in eight points to lead her team.

The first quarter saw Unity hold Ahmad Ibrahim scoreless. Unity’s full court press proved too much for Ahmad Ibrahim, holding them to within their own half. Priscilla (USS #5) made a couple of three-pointers in the quarter, pacing her team’s offence.

Ahmad Ibrahim finally made a breakthrough in the second quarter. Koh Hui Ling (AIS #7) made a couple of layups to put her team on the board. However, poor finishing by the rest of her team hurt their chances of clawing back into the game. Unity’s defensive pressure continued, forcing a lot of Ahmad Ibrahim turnovers.

The second half saw Unity continue the rout, even with their reserves in the game. They executed well on offence, finding the open player before attempting their shots. This allowed Unity to extend the lead even further.

Ahmad Ibrahim’s offensive woes continued throughout the game. Even though they found a way past the Unity press, they were unable to make their shots. When they tried to cut into the paint, Unity were more than able to match up to their drives.

In the end, Unity sealed the 66–24 win, putting them one step closer towards securing a place in the second round. They will next play Singapore Chinese Girls’ School on Thursday, April 3 at Clementi Sports Hall at 4pm. Ahmad Ibrahim will take on Ngee Ann Secondary on the adjacent court at the same time.

Unity captain, Musrifah bte Masiran (#12), said, “We were not on form in our last match, so it was good to put up a better performance today. We made our underbaskets today and had a good showing on offence. We know Singapore Chinese Girls’ School are a strong team, hopefully we will do a good job against them.”
