Clementi Sports Hall, Wednesday, March 26, 2014 — Anglo-Chinese School (Barker Road) (ACS (BR)) defeated New Town Secondary (NTS) 61–43 to register their second win in the first round of the National B Division Boys Basketball Championship.

Sherman Seet (ACS #10) scored a game-high 19 points, while Denilson Soh (NTS #11) put in a team-high 15 points.

At the start of the game, both ACS (Barker) and New Town made good defensive decisions, giving rise to an evenly-matched first quarter. A final layup conversion by Michael Palero (ACS #7) gave his team a 13–10 lead.

The score remained at 13–10 four minutes into the second quarter, as both teams chose to take shots outside the paint but struggled to find the range. Jeremy Koh (NTS #8) broke the scoring drought when he went on a drive to the basket to put in an easy two points.

New Town first took over the lead when Jeremy (#8) scored another two to make it 14–13. They tried to maintain their lead, but ACS (Barker) began to ease into their game and added points to the scoresheet steadily. By the end of the first half, ACS (Barker) had extended their lead to 26–17.

ACS (Barker) exhibited good team chemistry early in the third quarter, capitalizing on fast breaks to score points. Sherman Seet (#10) dished out a couple of good passes to his team mates and had good finishing, scoring points from layups. Koh Jin Quan (#11) also converted his offensive rebounds to help ACS (Barker) pull away gradually.

New Town on the other hand were forced to take flustered shots as they faced diligent defencing from ACS (Barker). With two minutes to go in the third quarter, New Town executed full court press which worked as they managed to intercept a couple of passes to go straight up for the basket.

Despite that, ACS (Barker) still managed to outscore New Town this quarter to extend their lead to 44–29, giving themselves breathing room over their opponents.

New Town played a better offensive game in the last quarter, but were unable to stop ACS (Barker) defensively. Towards the final minutes, New Town had several open scoring opportunities but were not able to convert them. The game ended with ACS (Barker) defeating New Town 61–43.

This is ACS (Barker)’s second win in the first round of the nationals, while New Town have registered two losses. New Town knocked off ACS (Barker) from round one last year, but ACS (Barker) came back better this year.

ACS (Barker) captain, Michael (#6) said, “We think that we just have to play hard like how we did for our last few games. After we lost the zonal final, we had decided to train hard during our March holidays and go for the national final.”
