Presbyterian High, Tuesday, March 10, 2014 — Fairfield Methodist School (FMSS) dug deep to beat Clementi Town 2–1 in the group stage of the National B Division Boys Volleyball Championship.
Their win lifts Fairfield Methodist to second in Group A with a 2–1 win–loss record. They have secured qualification for the next round of the championship. Despite their best efforts, Clementi Town finish their season with an 0–3 win–loss record.
The first set was a tight battle between both teams. Fairfield took the early lead through steady return play, and they were able to block Clementi’s spikes to take an early 4–2 lead. However, the momentum shifted to Clementi Town after that. They rallied to take a 21–17 lead, off an unforced error by Fairfield Methodist. They were then able to close out the set, winning 25–20.
Fairfield did well to regroup in the second set, racing out to an early lead. Clementi Town then capitalised on multiple unforced errors by Fairfield to tie the set at 10 apiece. Fairfield then went on a run and never looked back, winning the set 25–10.
The final set was tightly contested between both teams, but Fairfield were in cruise control now. Their players shook off the bad start in the first game and settled down. Clementi Town started to look rattled at the prospect of losing, occasionally yielding points due to miscommunication. This played into the hands of Fairfield Methodist, who were able to take the set 25–17. With Xinmin Secondary’s loss to Dunman Secondary in the next game, this meant that Fairfield Methodist secured qualification for the next round.
