Clementi Sports Hall, Friday, February 28, 2014 — Tanglin Secondary (TSS) needed a 21–8 final quarter to edge out River Valley High 51–47 in the second round of the West Zone B Division Boys Basketball Championship. Choo Wei Xiang (TSS #6) led all scorers with 17 points.
Both teams had already failed to qualify for the semi-final prior to this game.
River Valley took charge of the game in the first half, taking an early 29–20 lead. They were led by Darren Leung (RVHS #8) who scored 15 points. Tanglin’s defence were unable to account for River Valley’s hot shooting early on, desperately running to close out open players.
The second half saw a reversal of fortunes for both teams. Tanglin switched to a 3-2 zone defence, which they deployed to much success in the fourth quarter. This led to a lot of good defensive stops, which in turn allowed Tanglin to outscore River Valley 21–8 in the final quarter. Adrian (TSS #10) and Zhixin (TSS #7) were instrumental for their team, accounting for 15 points in total to help in the comeback.
Tanglin top scorer, Wei Xiang (#6), said, “I think the game was slow at first, thus we lost the first quarter. When our coach switched to man-to-man defence, it helped to pull back the score. This game was an improvement for us and I hope we will continue this next year. I am really pleased that we managed to make second round this year and hope that it will be a stepping stone for my juniors next year.”
