Clementi Sports Hall, Friday, February 28, 2014 — Jurong Secondary (JSS) secured their qualification for the semi-final with a 57–43 win over Jurong West Secondary (JWS) in the second round of the B Division Boys Basketball Championship. Sean Tiah (JWS #13) led all scorers with 16 points, while Eugene Yeong (JSS #9) paced a balanced Jurong attack with 9 points.

Jurong qualify top of Group X with a perfect 5–0 win–loss record while Jurong West finish their season with a 2–3 record. Jurong will now face Bukit Panjang Government High in the semi-finals. The match will be played on Wednesday, March 5, at 2pm at Clementi Sports Hall.

In a match where Jurong was expected to cruise to victory, the first half proved to be a nasty surprise for the zonal powerhouses. Jurong West displayed a lot of hustle to keep up with their stronger opponents, matching them bucket for bucket. The quarter ended with Jurong holding a slim two-point lead.

The second half saw Jurong assert their dominance with aggressive defending. They forced the Jurong West ball-handlers to the sidelines each time they brought the ball up court, reducing the amount of space that they could operate in.

A Jurong West scoring drought early in the fourth quarter saw Jurong build up a comfortable 14-point lead, something that they maintained through to the end of the game. Jurong finished 57–43 victors, sealing a perfect run through the second round and setting a match up with Bukit Panjang in the semi-final.

Jurong’s captain, Jia Hui (#6), said, “Our defence improved today, but we have lots more to work on. We were a bit nervous when Jurong West kept close to us in the first half. We need to keep calm and play to our pace. We will give it all we’ve got in the semi-final and leave no regrets.”
