Bdivision Softball CHIJ St. Theresa’s Convent vs Methodist Girls School.

Kallang Diamond, Thursday, 27 February 2014 – CHIJ St. Theresa’s Convent came from behind to top Methodist Girls’ School (MGS) 6-5 in Round 2 of the National B Division Softball Championship.

St. Theresa’s exploded for six runs in the fifth inning to win the game after trailing 0–5.

This is the second straight win for CHIJ St. Theresa’s Convent in the second round after a 10–6 win over Chung Cheng High School earlier. St. Theresa’s Convent are on a six-game win streak since the start of the championship.

This is the first loss for MGS in the second round after beating Tanjong Katong Girls’ School 9–5 in their previous game. MGS had qualified for Round 2 after finishing second in their Round 1 group with a 3–1 win-loss record.

MGS scored the first runs of the game. In the first inning, they clamped down on St. Theresa’s offence, only allowing Nastassha Tan (STC #10) to get on base.

Amanda Yeo (MGS #26) started her team’s offence in the first inning when she was walked by St. Theresa’s pitcher Dinie Raman (STC #5). She proceeded to steal two bases.

St. Theresa’s allowed Elizabeth Lim (MGS #1) to get on base to focus on Amanda Yeo (MGS #26) but they could stop her from scoring the first run for MGS.

Elizabeth Lim (MGS #1) then went on to score the second run for MGS.

An error by pitcher Dinie Raman allowed Faith Gan (MGS #33) to successfully get on base. St. Theresa’s eventually managed to get the first out when Raeanne Yong (STC #23) threw Pua Wan Xin (MGS #20) out at first base.

Faith Gan (MGS #33) then proceeded to score the third run for MGS for a 3–0 lead.

A base hit allowed Wong Rui En (MGS #21) to make it to first base as MGS continued their good form in the first inning. However, Dinie Raman (STC #5) managed to throw Nicole Liew (MGS #12) out at first, getting the second out of the inning.

Natalie Lim (MGS #9) then hit a single to get on base before stealing second base. MGS’ offence in the first inning finally ended when a fly ball hit by Jessica Then (MGS #16) was caught by Cheo Ai Lin (STC #12), leaving runners stranded on third and second base.

The second inning passed with neither teams being able to score any runs.

St. Theresa’s were unable to score any runs despite Dinie Raman (STC #5) hitting a triple with two downs in the third inning.

In the bottom of the third inning, after giving up another two runs to MGS, St. Theresa’s Convent managed to come back to get three consecutive outs to end the inning although they were now trailing 0–5.

MGS held St. Theresa’s in the top of the fourth inning, not allowing any runs.

In turn, St. Theresa’s shut down MGS in the bottom of the fourth inning with Dinie Raman (#5) catching two come backers.

At the start of the fifth inning, MGS were just three outs from winning the game. They successfully grounded out Kimberly Hay (STC #21) and struck out Raeanne Yong (STC #23).

With two outs against them, Dinie Raman (STC #5) went up to the plate. With a swing of her bat, she hit a solo home run, sparking the comeback for St. Theresa’s. Nastassha Tan (STC #10) then followed up with another home run and now St. Theresa’s were trailing only by three runs (2–5).

Daniella Kartawibowo (STC #36) successfully made it on base, continuing CHIJ St. Theresa’s convent comeback. With a runner on base, Hillary Giam (STC #80) hit a double, advancing Daniella Kartawibowo (STC #36).

MGS catcher Amanda Yeo (MGS #26) then made an error allowing Daniella Kartawibowo (STC #36) to score and St. Theresa’s were now two runs from tying it up.

With runners in scoring position, Cheo Ai Lin (STC #12) went up to bat. Natalie Lim (MGS #9) made an error at first base, allowing Cheo Ai Lin (STC #12) to get on base and Hillary Giam (STC #80) to score to make it 4–5.

MGS then made further costly errors, allowing Cheo Ai Lin (STC #12) to score to tie the game at 5–5.

Natalie Han (MGS #29) next made an overthrow, allowing Nurul Farah (STC #24) to get on second base. Nurul Farah (STC #24) then stole third. And after an off throw by the catcher, Amanda Yeo (MGS #26), Nurul came home to score the winning run.

Arisa Thaweeskulchai(STC #39) struck out, ending a six-run inning for St. Theresa’s.

MGS tried to come back in the bottom of the fifth but to no avail. Three outs later, St. Theresa’s won the game.

MGS will face Chung Cheng High School (Main) in their next game while St. Theresa’s Convent will play Tanjong Katong Girls’ School.
