Clementi Sports Hall, Wednesday, February 19, 2014 — Bukit Panjang Government High recorded a 72–23 win over Tanglin Secondary in the second round of the West Zone B Division Basketball Championship.

Vignesh (Bukit Panjang #11) led all scorers with 20 points, while Choo Wei Xiang (Tanglin #6) had 11 points for his team.

The first quarter was a close match, both teams matched each other basket for basket. Adrian Gonzales (Tanglin #10) stood out in this quarter, as he facilitated well for his team. His performance allowed Tanglin to get quality shots at the rim, leading to a steady scoring output. Bukit Panjang was led by Jerald Goh (#13), who accounted for half of his team’s points in the period.

Bukit Panjang gradually pulled away in the second quarter, on the back of multiple Tanglin turnovers. Each time Tanglin brought the ball up court, they would fumble the entry pass into the post. This allowed Bukit Panjang to capitalise on it, converting on the end of the fast break. Vignesh (Bukit Panjang #11) showed a nice first step, cutting into the paint and finishing with a finger roll. The half-time break saw Bukit Panjang hold a 19–31 lead.

From this point, fatigue was visible amongst the Tanglin team. Frustration was evident and almost boiled over when Leung Ka Wai (Tanglin #12) landed a hard foul on Vignesh (Bukit Panjang #11). Shrugging off the foul, Vignesh put in a solid performance in the quarter. He was strong on the boards and made all his underbaskets, gradually extending his team’s lead.

Adrian Gonzales (Tanglin #10) was the lone bright spark for his team throughout the game and it was the same in the fourth quarter. By then, Bukit Panjang sent in most of their reserves to close out the game. There was a short scoring drought on both sides for four minutes. The period was marked with a lot of physical play, as Tanglin never wavered, even though the game was out of reach for them. The Bukit Panjang reserves showed that they could hold their own, outscoring Tanglin 17–10 in the period.

Bukit Panjang captain, Dini Matin (#8), said, “We could have done better at the start. We felt pressured when the game was tight. We just need to stick to our basics and improve on it. We hope to reach top four in the zone and hopefully make the finals.”
