Anglican High School, Monday, February 8, 2014 — Chung Cheng High School (Main) (CCH) registered their first win of the second round when they beat Manjusri Secondary (MJR) 36–17 in the East Zone B Division Basketball Championship.

Loh Jun Li (CCH #7) put in a game-high nine points, while Lee Zen Wei (MJR #8), Richie Chee (MJR #10) and Hong Yu Chao (MJR #12) all scored four points each for their team.

Chung Cheng High played condensed defence at the start, making it hard for Manjusri to cut into the key. As such, Manjusri were forced to take outside shots which they failed to score from. Both teams had several free throws chances, but were unable to put in points from there.

The first two points of the game only came in at the 5-minute mark of the first quarter. It was scored by Jarrett Yip (#14) of Chung Cheng High, where he went up against his defender for an underbasket shot.

Chung Cheng High played better towards the end of the quarter, where they put in five points consecutively to make it 9–4.

In the second quarter, there were many turnovers but both teams were unable to capitalize on their scoring opportunities. Manjusri had many mis-passes which cost them chances to score during offensive plays. Chung Cheng High on the other hand, secured many offensive rebounds but had a low conversion rate.

Eight minutes into the second, Jarrett (#14) finally put in the first point of the quarter for Chung Cheng High with a free-throw. From there, his team mate Jasper Chua (#6) went on a fast break to score the first open basket of the game. It was a 3–0 run for the whole quarter, making it 12–4 going into the break.

In the second half, Manjusri coped with better defence and made a few interceptions, but they continued to lose the ball in the paint when met with their defenders.

Chung Cheng High got more confident after the first half, and the team began to gel, resulting in more fluid plays.

Although Manjusri put up a good fight in the second half to mark 13 points on the score sheet, it was not enough as Chung Cheng High continued to outscore them, ending the game 36–17 winners.

Chung Cheng High vice-captain Jasper (#6) said, “We did well overall. Last round we weren’t playing at this court, so we’re just taking this match as an experience to get used to the basket. I think we could have played better offensively. But defensively I think we did well. Our goal this season is East Zone top four.”

Manjusri captain Kai Xiang (#7) said, “I think we did badly. Offensive we weren’t making good decisions and our ball kept getting stolen. Defensively I think we did quite well today and played our best. We knew before that we might lose this game but still gave it our best.”
