Anglo-Chinese School (Independent), Monday, February 10, 2014 — Ang Mo Kio Secondary School (AMK) maintained their winning streak by dismantling Fairfield Methodist School (FMS) 5–0 in the group stage of the South Zone B Division Boys’ Badminton Championship.

Ang Mo Kio and Fairfield entered this matchup after recording victories over Mayflower Secondary and Kuo Chuan Presbyterian Secondary respectively last Friday.

Ang Mo Kio got off to a flying start when Sim Wee Kiat defeated Ryan Mok in the first singles match. Wee Kiat won the first set comfortably 21–14. The second set was a more evenly matched affair where Wee Kiat went into the interval with a slim lead of 11–10. But, a series of unforced errors resulted in Wee Kiat dropping the set to Ryan 21–14. Wee Kiat started the third set strongly by recording a 6–0 lead over Ryan at one point in the game. Wee Kiat eventually won the set 21–10 to obtain the crucial first point of the matchup.

In the first doubles match, Nigel Toh and Remus Lee from Ang Mo Kio led from the start to see off Benedict Tan and Chee Min Hao from Fairfield 21–14, 21–7.

The second singles match saw Lua Boon Keng of Ang Mo Kio leading his opponent, Amadeo Lee of Fairfield, by a huge margin of 14–0 in the first set before winning 21–2. The second set was an equally one-sided affair with Boon Keng taking it 21–7 to contribute a point to secure his team’s victory.

Having lost this matchup, Fairfield players, Liam Yi Xiang and Chen Sizheng, still produced a spirited performance to make Low Hon Zheng and Jordan Teoh of Ang Mo Kio sweat for their victory in the second doubles match.

In the opening set, it was Yi Xiang and Sizheng who went into the interval with a 11–6 lead. However, Hon Zheng and Jordan staged a comeback by cutting the lead to 11–10 before several unforced errors allowed Yi Xiang and Sizheng to gain control of the match again and attain a 20–18 lead. Hon Zheng and Jordan displayed great composure to save two match-point opportunities to level the game at 20–20 before going on to win the set 22–20.

The second set was equally intense. Neither team was completely dominant over the other. But, Hon Zheng and Jordan managed to edge out their opponents with another 22–20 score line.

Lionel Goh wrapped up Ang Mo Kio’s outing by producing a solid performance to hand Aaron Tan of Fairfield a 21–13, 21–10 defeat in the final singles match.

The final matches of the South Zone B Division Boys’ Badminton Championship group stage will be played on Friday, February 14. Ang Mo Kio, having won all 10 matches from the first two matchups, will look to remain unbeaten when they face Kuo Chuan Presbyterian Secondary next. Fairfield will hope to bounce back from their 5–0 drubbing as they take on Mayflower Secondary.
