Clementi Sports Hall, Monday, February 10, 2014 — Nan Hua High bounced back from a defeat in their previous game to beat Zhenghua Secondary 53–19 in the West Zone B Division Basketball Championship.
Cheah Yan (Nan Hua #13) tallied a game-high 13 points while Ng Pin Rong (#7) and Rhames Ng (#11) led Zhenghua with four points each.
The game started off slow as both teams failed to find their scoring touch. As the first quarter wore on, Nan Hua started to become more composed on defence. They got into Zhenghua’s passing lanes for easy steals, finishing on the other end for the score. It was more of the same throughout the rest of the quarter, as Nan Hua took an 18–4 lead.
Zhenghua’s desperation became evident in the second quarter. Their players started to settle for deep three-pointers. What was disconcerting was the fact that most of these shots came early in the possession as none of the players made an effort to swing the ball. Naturally, Zhenghua did not find the basket. Nan Hua showed good discipline not to bite on defence. This worked well as they shut out Zhenghua, holding them scoreless in the quarter. On offence, they took their time and scored when opportunities presented themselves.
Being held scoreless in the second quarter clearly affected the morale of the Zhenghua players. However, they did not let that deter them from pressing on with the game. Their sheer determination allowed them to break their scoring duck midway through the third quarter. Although by that time, it was evident that Nan Hua completely outclassed them on both ends. In the end, Nan Hua played a conservative game in the fourth quarter, putting in their reserves to seal the 53–19 win.
Nan Hua captain, Au Jun Wei (#6) commented, “It was a challenging game. We tried our best and never gave up. We have to work on making our open shots for the upcoming game against Pioneer.”
Nan Hua will face Pioneer in their decisive final game on Friday, February 14, 2014 at Clementi Sports Hall, where the victor will secure a second round spot.
