Clementi Sports Hall, Friday, February 7, 2014 — Hua Yi Secondary led from start to finish to take out Dunearn Secondary 56–38 in the West Zone B Division Boys Basketball Championship.

Farmocan Elijah Banez (Hua Yi #8) and Zandell Lee (Dunearn #7) were joint-top scorers with 14 points apiece.

Hua Yi started off with a 10–0 run in the first quarter, which allowed them to settle down on defence. Dunearn had no answer and were completely overwhelmed on both ends. Even though they had shots close to the rim, their attempts were met by a swarm of Hua Yi players. Dunearn finally broke their scoring drought near the end, putting in two layups in succession to end the quarter trailing 6–14.

In the second quarter, Dunearn started passing the ball better, which lead to quality shot attempts. This allowed them to go on a 7–2 run and trim the lead. Not to be outdone, Hua Yi put out a 7–0 run of their own to bring things back to status quo. The game was generally open, with both teams running the floor well. The size disparity between both teams was evident, as the smaller-sized Dunearn kept getting blocked whenever they tried to head inside. Hua Yi headed into the break with a comfortable 35–21 lead.

Hua Yi continued their good performance in the second half, showcasing an extremely disciplined and fluid offence that helped to extend their lead. Dunearn attempted a full-court press in a bid to stem the bleeding. However, Hua Yi managed to find a way to break out of it, foiling Dunearn’s plans to lead 46–29 at the end of the third quarter.

The final quarter was played at a slower pace, as Hua Yi took their time on offence to try and close out the game. Dunearn had a measure of success in bringing the ball closer to the rim, but the length of Hua Yi’s players again thwarted their attempts. Hua Yi maintained the lead with adequate offence and secured the eventual 56–38 win. Both teams now lie tied for third in the group with 2–2 records.

Hua Yi captain, Wong Li Yong (#6) said, “I think our defence was not good enough today, we have to improve on it before our next game. We ran well on the fast break today, so that was something positive to take away from the game. We hope that we will be able to make it to round two.”
