Clementi Sports Hall, Friday, February 7, 2014 — Bukit Batok Secondary overcame a rough start to post a 56–40 win over Chua Chu Kang Secondary in the first round of the West Zone B Division Basketball Championship.

Clarence Ngay (Bukit Batok #8) dropped a game-high 15 points, while Darren Pang (Chua Chu Kang #4) paced his team with seven points.

Chua Chu Kang came out strong in the first quarter, looking steady and composed on offence. They swung the ball around well and took shots in rhythm. Active hands on defence allowed them to keep Bukit Batok’s offence at bay. Even though Bukit Batok swung the ball well, they were unable to get good shots off. Chua Chu Kang slowly pulled away as the quarter wound down, taking an 18–13 lead.

The second quarter saw both teams more evenly matched. Bukit Batok finally found a way to disrupt Chua Chu Kang on the offensive end, trimming the lead. Bukit Batok showed real grit. Each time Chua Chu Kang scored, they found a way to answer. This mentality allowed them to head into the half-time break only three points down (26–29).

Bukit Batok broke through in the third quarter, as their shots finally started falling for them. They made three 3-pointers in the quarter and capitalized on multiple fast breaks. This, coupled with excellent defence, allowed them to snatch the lead from Chua Chu Kang. They overturned the deficit from the halftime break, ending the third up 47–36.

In the final quarter, Chua Chu Kang fought to get back into the game. However, fatigue started to set into their players which made it an uphill battle. Their attempts at penetrating into the paint were met by the stout Bukit Batok defence, desperate to deny any chance of a Chua Chu Kang comeback. Bukit Batok proved to be successful in this regard, as they emerged 56–40 victors.

Bukit Batok captain, Clarence (#8) commented, “Both teams did equally well today. We did not do well in the first half, but coach kept on encouraging us and we gave our best effort after that.”

Chua Chu Kang captain, Ho Junn Wey (#6) said, “This is our final game and we wanted to win it to advance to the second round. I think both teams played well and Bukit Batok deserved the win. They were more determined than us.”
