Clementi Sports Hall, Friday, February 7, 2014 — Defending champions Unity Secondary maintained their perfect record in the group with a 56–25 win over Nan Hua High School in the West Zone B Division Basketball Championship.
Yao Jun (Nan Hua #10) scored a game-high 13 points in a losing effort, while Thng Yong-An (Unity #5) had 11 points to lead his team.
The first quarter was an ugly affair, as Unity completely shut down Nan Hua on defence. Most of Nan Hua’s points came via free throws, as Unity kept swarming them in open play, preventing any hope of a decent look at the basket.
In the second quarter, Nan Hua looked poised to make a run, scoring two consecutive baskets on Unity. Unity duly quelled all hopes with a three-pointer by Jacinth Figueroa (Unity #10). They looked to be in cruise control as they gradually extended the lead. However, they kept turning the ball over, which was quite uncharacteristic of them.
The second half further evinced the gulf in ability between both teams. Unity slowly pulled away from Nan Hua and put the game out of reach with good play on both ends of the court. In spite of this, Nan Hua showed good spirit to continue fighting on.
Unity eventually finished the game with a 56–25 win, securing their fourth consecutive win in Group A. Nan Hua fall to a 2–1 record, although they are still in the running to qualify for round two with two games remaining.
Unity captain, Foo Jun Lin (#7) said, “I think we played quite well today, both offensively and defensively. We need to pass better and take more shots nearer to the rim to improve. We aim to claim the West Zone Championship and at least top four in Nationals.”
