Guangyang Primary School, Wednesday, February 5, 2014 — Peicai Secondary (PCS) used a dominant defensive effort to blow by Whitley Secondary School (WSS) 62–34 in the South Zone B Division Boys Basketball Championship. Alden Toh (PCS #8) led all scorers with 14 points in the game.

Peicai started the game strong, going into a full-court press immediately after making their first basket. This paid dividends for them, as they generated multiple steals on Whitley possessions. Whitley were unable to advance past the half court line, much less make a shot with the ball in their hands. Their misery was further compounded as they could not find an answer for Darren Ng (PCS #11) down low, who outmuscled their forwards in the post. Zhong How (PCS #6) had a remarkable shooting display in this quarter, scoring three 3-pointers as his team raced out to a 23–6 lead.

The second quarter was more of the same, as Peicai continued their full-court press mercilessly. However, they could not seem to find a shot in the half-court set, with most of their baskets coming off fast breaks. Whitley managed to show a measure of resistance on defence in this quarter, which kept the scores low on both sides. Peicai went into the half-time break with a comfortable 31–12 lead.

The third quarter was a better showing for Whitley, as they displayed composure to break through the full-court press. Unfortunately, they were unable to surpass the second hurdle of scoring on the other end. It took Whitley three minutes before they broke their scoring drought in the quarter. Peicai, on the other hand, had their offence humming smoothly. Darren (PCS #11) had a nice assist when he flashed a no-look pass to Alden (PCS #8) on the break for an easy layup.

The final quarter saw no major change in the match, save for a minor flare up by a Whitley player. That act earned his team a technical, which allowed Peicai to just extend the lead even more. In the end, Peicai emerged 62–34 winners, with a guaranteed place in the second round of the South Zone B Division Boys Basketball Championship.

Peicai captain, Zhong How (#6) said, “It’s the post-Chinese New Year period and I think we’re still tired. We tried to press today but it did not turn out as well as it should.”

Vice-captain, Darren Ng (#11) added, “I think we would like to improve on the second place in the zone we achieved in C Division. Hopefully this year we can do it.”
