NUS University Town, Wednesday, January 29, 2014 — Singapore Institute of Management (SIM) defeated Singapore Polytechnic (SP) in three straight sets (25–17, 25–22, 25–18) to clinch gold in the finals of the Institute-Varsity-Polytechnic (IVP) Volleyball Championship.

SIM last won the championship in 2012, and only managed to take home a bronze medal last year.

SIM were quick to gain an upper hand early in the game, taking the early lead with powerful spikes by Mark Leong (#4). Strong defence by Joash Lee (#5) and Melvin Ong (#7) helped SIM maintain the lead and comfortably take the first set with a score of 25–17.

SP upped their aggression in the second set with Lawrence Tan (#4) and Edward Lai (#6) delivering strong spikes across. This gave SP an eight-point lead at 8–0. SIM were undaunted and kept their cool. SIM’s libero Joash (#5) executed sterling defence, saving several spikes against SP. SIM gradually trimmed the deficit and mounted a strong comeback to close out the second set with a score of 25–22.

In the final set, SIM’s offensive duo of Javier Poon (#3) and Mark (#4) were too much for SP to handle as they conceded several spikes. In addition, the height and athleticism of Melvin (#7) gave him a defensive edge, denying several SP spike attempts. A clean spike by Javier (#3) sealed the final set 25–18, earning SIM the IVP Volleyball Championship.

SIM captain Edwin Yeo (#1) commented, “The team wanted to win the championship badly, as most of us are graduating seniors. Every point mattered and we put in our best effort to fight for every point.”

In the 3rd/4th placing match, Temasek Polytechnic (TP) knocked off defending champions National University of Singapore (NUS) 3–1 to take home bronze.
