vision 2030 live better through sports

NUS University Town, Monday, September 16, 2013 — Nanyang Technological University (NTU) rode a balanced attack to stroll past an undermanned Singapore Management University (SMU) 58–13 in the Singapore University Games (SUniG) Basketball Championship. Lim Jia Min (NTU #6) led all scorers with 12 points. As a testament to NTU’s diversity on offense, they had 10 different players appearing on the scoresheet.

This marks NTU’s second win in SUniG, having won 74–52 against SIM in an earlier game. They now need to win their final game against National University of Singapore (NUS) to clinch first place. For SMU, this is their second loss, having gone down to NUS 27–46 in their earlier game.

NTU showed no mercy out of the gates as Lim Jia Min (NTU #6) went on a personal 7–0 run to start off the game. SMU looked completely outclassed on defence, as NTU hit precise passes around the perimeter to free up their players for open shots.

SMU’s offence was anaemic, as players were unable to find a way past NTU’s smothering defence. This led to quite a few shot-clock violations in the course of the game, allowing NTU to build up an insurmountable lead.

On top of that, SMU had only eight players suit up for the game. This disadvantage became apparent late in the game, as their players started to struggle to keep pace with NTU. On a couple of rare occasions, Amber Joy Estad (SMU #15) managed to use her size advantage on the boards to score some points for SMU.

In the end, NTU emerged 58–13 winners. They now look to secure the SUniG title with a win against NUS in their final game.

NTU captain Tsang Wei Yi (#2) said: ” I think it was an easy game, but we still have to improve on our shooting and our defence. We have already beaten SIM, so our next game against NUS is extremely important.”

Grace Ang (SMU #8) said: ” I think we fought hard as a team, even though we lacked players. This team only had three weeks of training, but I am glad they did not give up!”
