PESEB Court 1, Friday, July 19, 2013 — Mayflower Secondary beat Anglo-Chinese School (Barker Road) 50–42 in a close fight during Round 1 of the South Zone C Division Basketball Championship.

Mayflower held the lead with Jason Chan (#9) sinking in a calm three at the start, inspiring a 6–0 run as teammate Ramos Goh (#12) secured a foul-in. Slowly but surely, ACS (Barker) caught up with Akshay Anand (#9) contributing fast baskets and the tall physique of V Lavin Raj (#15) dominating the paint. His underbasket ended the first quarter leaving Mayflower trailing 8—14.

The second quarter saw both teams exchanging leads and Mayflower’s Ramos (#12) scoring the equalizer 14–14 at four minutes. Halfway through the quarter, ACS (Barker) became more hesitant with their passes and several unnecessary fouls were committed. Mayflower’s pointguard Isryad (#6) displayed commendable performance in dribbling and ball distribution, being key to many assisted plays. Jordan Lee (#7) of Mayflower, important for several attacks, ended the quarter 20–18 with his jumper.

ACS (Barker) was unfazed, biting behind every point Mayflower scored in the second half. Ritz Neo (#8) stepped in for a lay-up at five minutes, pulling ACS (Barker) into the lead 25–24. Ram Sunda Putra (#7), instrumental in creating scoring opportunities for ACS (Barker), pulled them to an equaliser 31–31. ACS (Barker) led the third quarter 32–31.

Mayflower’s man-to-man defence came fresh into the last quarter, successfully securing them a few intercepts and baskets. Their momentum picked up this crucial quarter, devastating ACS (Barker) with a 6–0 run towards the end. Mayflower eventually emerged victorious 50–42.

Akshay Anand (#9), captain of ACS (Barker), commented, “We persevered and tried our best, but we fell short a little on some plays. Mayflower is a very strong team.”

Mayflower’s captain Jason Chan (#9) was a mixture of relief and joy. “For the first quarter, we didn’t make use of the opportunity to extend the lead. In the fourth quarter however, we managed a 8-point lead. I am very glad we won and we will take the rest of the journey step by step. We are aiming to enter the top 4 in the zonals.”
