vision 2030 live better through sports

Clementi Sports Hall, Wednesday, July 17, 2013 — Jurong Secondary established themselves as firm title contenders for the West Zone C Division Basketball Championship as they registered as comprehensive 66–12 win over Dunearn Secondary in Group B.

It was Jurong’s fourth win in as many games after comfortable victories over Jurongville, Fajar, and Juying. For Dunearn, they are still in the hunt for a place in the next round as this was only their first defeat after winning their previous two matches.

Jurong, who were runners-up in last year’s competition, never trailed in a match where they displayed a high level of defensive intensity to keep Dunearn at bay. That allowed them to take a huge 12–0 lead before Dunearn got on the score board with just over three minutes remaining in the first quarter.

Jurong had an 18–2 lead by the end of the first 10 minutes.

They stepped it up a notch in the second period and did not allow Dunearn to score a single basket throughout the 10 minutes. The height disadvantage also prevented Dunearn from making drives to the basket and Jurong dominated the boards.

Thanks to sharp shooting and domination inside the paint at the other end, Jurong poured in 21 unanswered points in the second quarter for an insurmountable 39–2 lead at the half.

Despite holding a massive lead, Jurong did not take their foot off the pedal. Interestingly, their coach employed a full-court defensive press in the third quarter, forcing Dunearn into a couple of careless turnovers.

The fourth quarter was a mere formality as Jurong rested their starters. Still, they managed to maintain the lead and though they did not dominate like they did in the first three quarters, they comfortably finished the match with a final score of 66–12.

Credit needs to be given to Dunearn for being able to match their opponents in intensity and spectators could tell they left their all on the court. Despite facing a massive deficit, they went for every loose ball and did not make it easy for Jurong.

Norisham (#15), captain of Jurong Secondary, commented: “Dunearn are quite a good team but we extended our lead at the start. We did well. Most of our players did a good job.”

“Our defence was the key in this game. It was a good experience to do a full-court press and we will learn from it,” added Norisham.

When asked who their biggest threat is in this tournament, the 14-year-old replied without hesitation: “Unity. We look forward to playing against Unity.”
