Clementi Sports Hall, Monday, July 15, 2013 — Dunearn Secondary defeat Jurongville Secondary 37–31 in Round 1 of the West Zone C Division Boys’ Basketball Championship.

Jurongville started the first quarter with two quick drives from Frank Jiang (#10) and Hoong Yong Kang (#12) to put them up 4–0. Dunearn quickly responded with two quick baskets to tie the game at four apiece. With under two minutes to play, an uncontested fast break layup from Chin Chang An (#14) and a baseline jumper from Yong Kang helped Jurongville end the quarter leading 8–4.

The second quarter belonged to Jurongville as they outplayed Dunearn through their hassling defence, forcing multiple turnovers. Jurongville outscored Dunearn 12–6 to take a comfortable 20–10 lead into the half-time break.

Dunearn mounted a strong comeback in a crucial third quarter through a full court defensive press. Dunearn’s defence proved effective as they successfully contained Jurongville’s offensive rhythm. Dominic Chua (#4) was stellar and he single-handedly outscored the Jurongville squad 11–5, through impressive and speedy drives to the basket. Dunearn trailed Jurongville 25–21 at the end of the third.

Ong Yue Hao (#6) found a loophole amidst the Jurongville defence and snuck backdoor for the easy two to start the final quarter rolling, reducing the deficit to just two points (25–23). Dominic (#4) continued his brilliance on court as he poured in six straight points to give Dunearn their first lead of the game at 25–29. Jurongville quickly regained a slim two point lead (31–29) through three successive baskets. Their lead was short-lived as Dunearn took over and pulled away with an eventual 37–31 win.

Dunearn’s captain Victor Chua (#5) commented: “The game was quite intense. We made a lot of bad passes and we had bad finishing. We did well in the third quarter in our defence and offence. Dominic (Dunearn #4) was brilliant in the third quarter.”
