Clementi Sports Hall, Monday, April 1, 2013 — Canberra Secondary beat Anglo-Chinese School (Barker Road) (ACS(BR)) 49–37 in a make-or-break match for the latter at the National B Division Boys’ Basketball Championship.

The match started with both teams trading baskets until Gabryl Koh (#7) scored a fast-break and sunk in a free throw to extend Canberra’s lead 8–4. ACS (BR) struggled to convert their shots until Misheel Bayaraa (#7) successfully scored two free throws. However, ACS (BR)’s lack of alertness in their zone defence allowed Gabryl (#7) to claim two consecutive layups for Canberra. The first quarter ended with ACS (BR) trailing 8–14, due to unnecessary fouls and missed shots.

ACS (BR) came back stronger in the second quarter as Michael Palero (#6) secured several rebounds and scored in the paint. However, Gabryl (#7) of Canberra again upset ACS (BR)’s spirit by intercepting twice to score two successive baskets. After a time-out, ACS (BR) turned the game around to lead 17–16 thanks to a jumper from Misheel (#7).

Canberra focused much of their attack within the paint and drew many fouls there while ACS (BR) used three-point shots to organise their scoring. Gabryl (#7) ended ACS (BR)’s short lead as he sunk in a free throw to level at 17–17 with two minutes remaning. Aaron Sim (#9) of Canberra, with his impressive speed and skilled dribbling, contributed to many fast-break attempts, keeping Canberra’s lead at 20–17.

The third quarter began with point guard Aaron (#9) continuing with his astonishing speed, steals and fast-breaks to propel Canberra ahead. However, ACS (BR) responded with Sih Yong Jie (#14) of ACS (BR) sinking in a three-pointer. With calm composure, Yong Jie also steadily converted all the three free throws he earned in the quarter. He went on to execute a brilliant spin move and assisted teammate Ye Guang Hao (#11), who scored an under-basket. Koh Jin Quan (#15) of ACS (BR) did a three-point buzzer beater to give his team a 33–32.

In the last quarter, Canberra’s Ryan Wong (#12) wasted no time in scoring a two to upset ACS (BR)’s lead (33–34). Canberra inched forward with Gabryl (#7) contributing three with a foul-in (33–37). Canberra pulled further ahead with Aaron (#9) sinking another three (33–40). ACS (BR) attacks were futile as they rushed their shots and passes. With one minute left, three-pointers from Aaron (#9) and Gabryl (#7) sealed the game 49–37 for Canberra.

Jordan Wong (#10), captain of ACS (BR), felt disappointed at the loss.

“We were not in our 100% condition as many in the team were sick. However, we did play our 100%,” said Jordan.

Canberra’s captain Anthony Tan (#6) commented: “It was a very tough fight. We did well in the offense but not so for the rebounds. ACS (BR) is a very good team with a number of three-point shooters.”
