Jurong East Sports Hall, Monday, March 11, 2013 – Anglo-Chinese School (Barker Road) outlasted Catholic High to win 62–54 and in the process defend their South Zone B Division Basketball Championship.

ACS’s Sih Yong Jie (#14) led all scorers with 21 points while Wesley Teo (#4) of Catholic High had a team-high of 11 points.

Both teams were balanced and started the quarter evenly. Catholic High’s Toh Tze Cong (#15) was a beast in the paint and dominated the offensive boards. Tze Cong paced his team by contributing the first seven points. However, he soon found himself in foul trouble and had to be substituted out. Catholic High led by a point (11–10) at the end of the first quarter.

The second quarter commenced with ACS (Barker) on a 6–0 run, which saw them take a 16–11 lead. Sih Yong Jie (ACS #14) easily penetrated the Catholic High defence, who could only commit fouls to prevent easy baskets. Wesley (#4) stepped up for Catholic High, crashing the boards with teammate Loh Wan Yuan (#11) carrying the offensive load with seven points. The second quarter saw multiple lead changes which eventually ended in Catholic High’s favour (29–27).

In the third quarter, Yong Jie (ACS #14) fought hard to keep his team in the game with his easy penetration of the Catholic High defence. Catholic High responded through a balanced offence to match Yong Jie’s scoring, ending the quarter with a slim three–point lead (42–39).

In the final quarter, the stingy ACS (Barker) defence sparked a 10-0 run and ACS (Barker) overtook Catholic High by seven points.

After a jumpshot by Joel Ong (Catholic High #10), Misheel Bayaraa (#7) of ACS (Barker) relentlessly made 3 consecutive baskets to give ACS their largest lead of the game at 11 points (44–55).

With the clock ticking, Toh Tze Cong (Catholic High #15) came back into play. Behind stellar defensive and offensive plays, he helped his team reduce the deficit to just five points (52–57) with less than two minutes to play. However, he would eventually foul out of the game within the next few seconds.

ACS (Barker) eventually pulled away with a buzzer-beating layup by Misheel Bayaraa (ACS #7) to seal a 62–54 win.

“We came in nervous, knowing that Catholic High is one of our strongest competitors. We had a 50–50 chance of winning,” said ACS (Barker) captain, Jordan Wong (#10). He added: “It was our teachers and supporters that helped calm our nerves.”
