Singapore Basketball Centre, Monday, February 18, 2013 – Canberra Secondary beat Naval Base Secondary 56-36 to win their opening Round 2 game of the North Zone B Division Boys’ Basketball Championship.

Aaron Sim (#9) of Canberra had a game-high 12 points while Kim Villanueva (#9) and Carl Iyog (#5) of Naval Base had a team-high nine points each.

“We did not perform well in the first quarter. We got back our momentum after the first quarter and we were much better in our defense,” said Anthony Tan (#6), Canberra’s captain.

Anthony felt that the Naval Base players were good opponents with sharp shooting skills. He also added that his team needed to work on his teamwork and communication.

The game started out close with Canberra having just a one-point, 10-9 lead over Naval Base Secondary at the end of the first quarter.

Naval Base took the lead in the second quarter with good team chemistry and defense as they denied most of Canberra’s attempts.

However, Canberra made a comeback, levelled the score, and took a 22-20 lead into half time.

Canberra, touted as a team good enough for a semi-final spot, continued their scoring streak in the third quarter as Naval Base hit a scoring drought. Canberra outscored Naval Base 18-9 in the third quarter to establish an 11-point, 40-29 lead going into the fourth.

Canberra’s lead was never seriously threatened in the fourth quarter and they wrapped it up 56-36.

Asked his opinion of the likely semi-finalists, Anthony chuckled and said: “Definitely North Vista. It could be slightly hard for us, but we would be trying our very best.”

Canberra just missed out on a top-four place in 2012.

Canberra will play Deyi Secondary in their next game while Naval Base will have to contend with defending champions North Vista Secondary in their next encounter. Both games are on Wednesday, February 20th, at Singapore Basketball Centre.
