NUS Multi-Purpose Sports Hall 5, Tuesday, September 25, 2012 — The Singapore Institute of Management (SIM) held off a late surge by the Singapore Management University (SMU) to win 56-54 in a thrilling game which went to overtime.

This was SIM’s first win and SMU’s second loss in the Singapore University Games (SUniG) basketball tournament.

Lee Zhi Shu (#11) had a game-high 15 points for SMU while Teh Kaiyuan (#6) scored a team-high of 12 for SIM.

SMU came out strong early and led 14-13 at the end of the first quarter. But their lead was soon soon. SIM took control of the game and led midway through the second quarter before closing out the second quarter four points ahead at 23-19.

The story was the same in the third quarter, though SMU sparked to life on occasion and looked to close in on SIM. However, SIM would eventually pull away to establish a healthy lead once again.

Trailing 30-36 heading into the fourth quarter, SMU came back out to mount a comeback. They manage to capitalise on the SIM mistakes to convert easy baskets and also got many second-chance baskets from rebounds.

With 18.9 seconds left, SMU tied it up 47-47.

SIM called a timeout to advance the ball forward and regroup for the last shot. The ball was inbounded to Edwin Low (SIM #1) who had been outstanding during the game with many assists. The players were anticipating a pass to a teammate for the last basket, but Edwin took it upon himself and found open space to take a shot before the buzzer. The shot did not drop and the game headed for overtime.

In overtime, the atmosphere was tense, with neither team wanting to lose after fighting so hard for every point. Both teams traded baskets on either end and the lead established by either team was no more than two points.

Towards the end of overtime, SIM converted a 2-pointer to level the game at 54-54. SIM then kept the pressure on with a man-to-man defence, which saw Jansen Koay (SIM #12) strip the ball from his opponent to go for an uncontested lay-up in the final moment of the quarter.

It proved to be the winning basket as Lee Zhi Shu (SMU #11) missed a potential game winner from the 3-point line.
