Clementi Sports Hall, Tuesday, August 14, 2012 — In their last Round 2 match in the National C Division Basketball Championship, Unity Secondary managed to beat Singapore Chinese Girls’ School (SCGS) 48-41, just two points short of the score they needed to advance to the semi-finals.

Unity would have avoided elimination had they won by more than nine points, but SCGS managed to narrow the gap by just enough to prevent the West Zone champions from qualifying for semi-finals.

Both teams were neck-and-neck for the first three quarters, exchanging the lead repeatedly with neither team clearly coming out ahead. In the fourth quarter, however, Unity suddenly went on a scoring spree after switching to a full-court press, going on repeated fast breaks after interrupting SCGS’s offense and scoring eight points unanswered.

At the end of this 8-0 run, Unity were 10 points ahead of SCGS at 39-29, giving them their biggest lead in the game and the chance to progress to the Top Four.

However, in the last five minutes of the game, SCGS managed to claw back some points to reduce Unity’s lead, including a fast break and lay-up followed by a three-pointer by Bernice Yeo (#4), who scored a team-high 10 points for SCGS.

Although SCGS lost this match, they were tied with Nanyang Girls’ High and Unity with two wins and one loss after Nanyang had beaten Deyi Secondary on the other court. Unity were eliminated based on points difference, and SCGS proceeded to top the group. SCGS and Nanyang will move on to the semi-finals.

SCGS team captain, Rachel Mok (#6), was not pleased with the defeat.

“I think that today we definitely didn’t play as well as we did before. We’re not making any excuses, we cannot afford to make excuses for how we played. We may have won by scoreline, but we’re not going to make excuses for today’s match,” said Rachel.

“We’re going to rest well, we’re going to train hard, we’re going to play our very best for the next two matches, these are our most important matches,” she continued.

“Losing this match — I think — we woke up. We cannot keep playing like this. We will try even harder than we did.”

SCGS will play Anglican High in one semi-final on Thursday, 16th August, 1.30pm at Clementi Sports Hall. The other semi-final will see Nanyang Girls’ High going up against Dunman Secondary.
