Clementi Sports Hall, Thursday, August 2, 2012 – Dunman High came from behind to beat Yishun Town Secondary 42-33 in the first round of the National C Division Girls’ Basketball Championship.

It was a bottom-of-the-table clash with both teams having previously lost their matches to Unity Secondary and CHIJ Secondary (Toa Payoh). With the win, Dunman High rounded up their National campaign with one win while Yishun Town finished bottom of the group with no wins in three matches.

The game was a tight affair with both teams taking turns to grab the lead. Yishun Town came out tops in the first quarter with an 8-6 lead.

Dunman High came out strong in the second quarter. Their captain Clara Ho (#11), along with Jerlin Toh (#7) and Mavis Chng (#8), led the attack.

Yishun Town had numerous chances at the basket, but they could not convert them, even when found unguarded in the paint. As a result, they could only score six points in the second quarter, while Dunman High scored 13 points to give them a 19-14 half-time lead.

Dunman High opened the third quarter by extending their lead to seven points at 21-14. However, they paid for poor defending and allowed Yishun Town to get back into the game.

Yishun Town’s Kesshini Thiru (#9) scored two points to give her team a 26-25 lead going into the last quarter.

Dunman High grabbed the lead back once the final quarter commenced with Clara Ho sinking a three-point play to put her team 28-26 up.

Yishun Town once again had only themselves to blame for losing their lead. They committed many unnecessary fouls and made many missed passes to hand the advantage to Dunman High.

Dunman High surged ahead and at one point led by 11 points (31-42), the largest lead in the game.

Yishun Town’s Leyi (#13) had the perfect chance for her team to get back into the game, but she missed from right under the basket even though she was unchallenged.

Dunman High eventually outscored Yishun Town 17-7 in the final quarter to win 42-33.

Dunman High’s Clara Ho put up an impressive play to emerge with a game-high 13 points. Yishun Town’s #6 was the top scorer for her team with seven points.

Clara was happy with her team’s first win in the Nationals.

“We played well. It is our first win in the Nationals so we are happy,” said Clara.

On her team’s performance throughout the basketball season, Clara said: “We improved a lot as a team but we can still improve more. We are going to come back stronger next year.”

“The best game we played was against Anglican High. We lost by two points, but we fought hard and had a chance to win. We improved our performance after that game.”

P.S. Dunman High lost to Unity Secondary and CHIJ Toa Payoh 21-79 and 33-57 respectively. Yishun Town lost to Unity Secondary 35-44, and fell to CHIJ Toa Payoh 50-52.
