Clementi Sports Hall, Tuesday, July 31, 2012 – Anglican High School threw away an early lead but regained it in the final quarter to narrowly defeat Kranji Secondary 40-38 in the National C Division Girls’ Basketball Championship.

This is the first game of National Championship for both teams.

Kranji’s Nabilah Bte Alfian (#8) managed a game-high 19 points and her teammate Kladia (#4) assisted with 11 points, but it was not enough to prevent her team from losing. Anglican High captain Amelie Lim (#8) sunk a team-high 13 points to lead her team to victory.

Anglican High led 12-8 after the first quarter, but failed to score a single point in the second which allowed Kranji to garner a 14-point lead going into the second half.

Anglican High started their fight back in the third quarter. They made numerous steals to restrict Kranji from shooting and improved on their conversion rate to reduce the deficit to nine points.

With Kranji leading 37-28 in the last quarter, Anglican fought hard to get back into the game, and their efforts paid off. They became stoic in defence, clamping down on Kranji’s attack. At the other end of the court, they did not miss their chances at the basket.

At one point in the game, Anglican High’s Charmaine Lam (#12) put in a basket to to trail by a slender one point at 36-37.

While Anglican High looked resurgent, Kranji were struggling, with their main players #8 and #4 battling injuries.

The tide turned with 54 seconds left on the clock when Anglican High took the lead 39-38 through a free throw by Navenee Lingam (#15). She sunk another free throw several seconds later and Anglican High eventually held on to win 40-38.

Anglican High captain Amelie Lim (#8) had positive things to say about her opponents.

“The Kranji players really persevered and fought hard. Even though some of them were injured, they still continued to play and press on,” said Amelie.

On her team’s performance, Amelie said: “We played really well in the third and fourth quarter but we have to buck up on our fighting spirit.”

“I told my team that if we scored and they scored, it would be meaningless. We have to score and stop our opponents from scoring and that is what we did.”

When asked about the team’s target for the National competition, Amelie said: “We are going to fight and go as far as we can.”

P.S. Anglican High beat St. Margaret’s Secondary 45-15 for their second win on Wednesday, August 1st. St. Margaret’s lost their first match to Deyi Secondary. Kranji lost their second in a row when they went down 25-48 to Deyi Secondary on the same day.
