Clementi Sports Hall, Tuesday, July 31, 2012 – Assumption English School were no match for Singapore Chinese Girls’ School (SCGS) as they were outclassed 86-19 in the first round of the National C Division Girls’ Basketball Championship.

SCGS played an impressive game in their first match of the competition. In the last quarter alone, they scored 32 points, and every member of the team managed to make it onto the score sheet.

SCGS vice-captain Rachel Mok’s (#6) accurate lay-ups earned her a game-high 16 points. Assumption English’s Lim Jia Wen (#12), picked out by Rachel as the best player for Assumption English, was the top scorer of her team with 7 points.

Though the final points difference was large, the game started out as a close affair. SCGS scored five points straight, but Assumption English came back through Jia Wen, levelling the score at 5-5.

However, SCGS surged ahead after that. SCGS made numerous steals to cut off their opponents and Assumption English could barely bring the ball up the court.

SCGS were relentless, restricting Assumption English to no points in the second quarter, and managed to round up the first half leading 35-7.

Assumption English doubled their points in the third quarter, putting in seven points for a total of 14 points, but SCGS put in 19 that quarter to extend their lead to lead 54-14.

SCGS were relentless in the final quarter. They put in 32 points in that quarter alone to win the game 86-19.

SCGS’s Rachel was pleased with her team’s performance.

“The team played well. We could have done better in the first quarter but we still did well. We still have to work hard because this is only the first game and there are many games to go,” said Rachel.

On the team’s target for the National competition, Rachel said: “We hope to make it to the Top 4 but of course we aim to be first.”

Despite the loss, Assumption English captain Lim Jia Wen (#12) was happy.

“We expected to lose the match but we fought hard. Our target was just to get into West Zone Top 4, so we are happy just to play in the Nationals,” said Jia Wen.

SCGS will next face Ngee Ann Secondary, who lost their first match to Nan Chiau Secondary, on Thursday, August 2nd. Assumption English will try to earn their first win against Nan Chiau Secondary on the same day. Both games will be held at Clementi Sports Hall.
