Clementi Sports Hall, Tuesday, July 31, 2012 — After three unspectacular quarters, the girls from Deyi Secondary picked up their game to beat St. Margaret’s Secondary 34-13 in this first round match of the National C Division Girls’ Basketball Championship.

Deyi are the current North Zone champions, while St. Margaret’s finished fourth in the South Zone.

In the final quarter, Deyi significantly tightened their offense. Between the third and ninth minutes, Deyi scored 18 points — more than they had scored in the previous three quarters combined — without letting St. Margaret’s score a single point.

Akila (#8) of St. Margaret’s managed to get a clear shot for two in the last 30 seconds, but whatever effect that had on the score gap was negated when Deyi’s Mabel Koh (#7) made her buzzer-beater in the last two seconds.

Mabel was the highest scorer for Deyi with a game-high 8 points. Her swiftness and relative shooting accuracy made her stand out in the otherwise unexciting match.

St. Margaret’s game was fraught with misses, which hurt them greatly. The St. Margaret’s players were moderately capable of catching their own offensive rebounds, but were simply unable to make their shots count. The team scored only twice in the first two quarters, and their performance in the latter two was not much better.

Deyi made their own share of missed shots and missed passes, both of which resulted in many unnecessary turnovers. In the first quarter, while Deyi were able to advance the ball down the court without incident, St. Margaret’s defense was able to stop their drives, catch their fumbles, and block their shots.

As the game progressed, however, Deyi began to run harder and cut down on mis-passes, eventually pulling away in the fourth quarter. St. Margaret’s were unable to keep up, and the gap quickly opened between the teams.

Deyi’s next opponents are Kranji Secondary. The match will be on Wednesday, August 1st, 3.15pm at Clementi Sports Hall.

St. Margaret’s will next face off against Anglican High, also on Wednesday. St. Margaret’s must upset Anglican High if they hope to stay in contention.
