Clementi Sports Hall, Monday, July 16, 2012 – Unity Secondary defeated Jurong West Secondary 55-35 to maintain their unbeaten run in the West Zone C Division Boys’ Basketball Championship.
This is Unity’s third win of Round 2 and they have a perfect 3-0 win-loss record in Group Y. This loss drops Jurong West to 1-2. They had lost to Jurong Secondary previously, after opening Round 2 with a win over River Valley High.
Unity took an early lead, winning the first quarter 17-7. Unity were not as accurate as usual, missing many chances, but they made up for it with their defence, making many mid-court interceptions, and denying Jurong West chances at the basket.
Unity outscored Jurong West 12-7 in the second quarter to extend their lead to 29-14 at half time.
However, Jurong West did not give up the fight. In the third quarter, Jurong West played a tighter defence, restricting Unity to shots from outside and grabbing many rebounds. At the other end of the court, Kok Siong (#11) and Shaun Ong (#8) headed the attack, making numerous fast breaks. They outscored Unity 14-12 in the quarter, to trail Unity by 13 points at 28-41.
In the final quarter, Jurong West kept up their fight, reducing the deficit at one point to eight points. Jurong West fought valiantly but they could not match a superior Unity side, and eventually lost 35-55.
Unity’s Thng Yong An (#5) was unmatched at the basket, putting in a game-high 21 points. Michael (#13) from Jurong West was the top scorer for his team with 10 points.
Unity will aim to keep up their unbeaten run when they meet River Valley High on Wednesday, July 18th. Jurong West will try to chalk up another win when they face School of Science of Technology on the same day. Both games will be held at Clementi Sports Hall.
