PESEB, Monday, July 16, 2012 — St Andrew’s Secondary secured their first win in the second round of the South Zone C Division Boys’ Basketball Championship by beating Serangoon Garden Secondary 51-45.

Gerald Yee (#7) of St Andrew’s was the game’s top-scorer, racking up 26 points for his team, while Bryan Chew (#9) was Serangoon Garden’s top-scorer with 18.

The Saints took an early lead in the first quarter, with Gerald (#7) scoring two points in the first few seconds of the game. He drew attention to himself with his speed and accuracy, as he rarely missed an opportunity to score. He dodged the Serangoon Garden defenders effortlessly to score time and time again for the entire game.

Conversely, it seemed like the Serangoon Garden players were unable to shake off St Andrew’s defenders. They struggled to shoot accurately under the Saints’ pressure.

The second quarter saw Saints extending their lead. The Saints’ ability to score off their rebounds, combined with Serangoon Garden’s inability to intercept their passes and gain possession of the ball, allowed the Saints to go into half-time with a 25-13 lead.

Serangoon Garden managed to outscore the Saints 11-8 in the third quarter to narrow the deficit to nine points at 24-33. Despite their coach shouting “Rebound!” multiple times, Serangoon Garden struggled to catch their rebounds. When they did manage to get through the Saints’ defence, the Serangoon Garden players were usually too overwhelmed to make a good shot.

Serangoon Garden came fighting back in the last quarter. They matched the Saints almost basket for basket. Both teams’ coaches called for multiple timeouts as things started to get more frantic towards the end of the quarter.

Once again, Serangoon Garden managed to outscore the Saints 21-18 in this quarter but they were unable to make up the deficit, going down by six points, 45-51.

“I’m happy with our defense and offense. Even though Serangoon Garden is a strong team, we tried out best to play well,” said Gerald Yee of the Saints’ victory. “We need to work on our offense. There were a lot of missed passes and lay-ups.”

“Our hope for this season is to get into the Nationals. We can do this if we work hard and play hard,” he concluded.

This is the Saints first win of the second round. They had previously lost 31-62 to Raffles Institution. Their next game is with Pierce Secondary, on Wednesday, July 18th, at 3.30pm.

Serangoon Garden will be playing Peicai Secondary on the same day at 2.15pm. This is their third loss in the second round.

Both games will be at the PESEB.
