Clementi Sports Hall, Monday, July 16, 2012 — Nan Hua High notched up their first win in Round 2 with a 40-36 defeat of Teck Whye Secondary in the West Zone C Division Basketball Championship.

This was both teams’ third game in the second round. With the win, Nan Hua now have a 2-1 win-loss record. Teck Whye, who beat Westwood Secondary, but lost to Hillgrove Secondary in their earlier games, fell to 1-2.

Poor shooting by Nan Hua allowed Teck Whye to take a a slight 9-8 lead at the end of the first quarter. Nan Hua’s Ashwin Ravi (#10) missed five out of six free throws he had in the first quarter.

Teck Whye had better accuracy when it came to their free throws, but a lethargic defence gave Nan Hua more scoring chances in the second quarter, helping them overtake Teck Whye to lead 23-15 at half time.

Teck Whye seemed to be too overly dependent on their main shooter, Adam (#12), and left him upfront alone in the attack. Even with the lack of support, he deftly cut through the defence with his nifty footwork, putting in a game-high 26 points for his team.

Adam was responsible for scoring all of Teck Whye’s points in the first and last quarter. At one point of the game, he swooped past five Nan Hua players to effortlessly put in a basket.

However, Adam alone could not carry the team. Despite the addition of Edmund (#11) in the third quarter to boost their attack, Teck Whye could not close the gap on their rivals who kept up a relentless attack.

Nan Hua’s Ashwin Ravi (#10) made up for his first quarter misses by sinking two 3-point shots and was eventually the top scorer for his team with 14 points. Team-mates, Shawn Ng (#11) and Khoo Chee Hau (#7), also got onto the scoreboard.

In the last minute of play, Adam’s (#12) anger and disappointment at his team’s performance showed on court when he uncharacteristically missed two vital free throws. Teck Whye eventually went down 36-40.

Nan Hua and Teck Whye are currently ranked fourth and fifth respectively in Group X after this game and have a slim chance of getting into the semi-finals.

Teck Whye’s next game is against New Town Secondary on Wednesday, July 18th, while Nan Hua hope to chalk up another win against bottom-of-the-table Westwood Secondary on the same day.
