PESEB, Thursday, July 12, 2012 – Raffles Institution (RI) shook off early nerves to beat Serangoon Garden Secondary 43-33 in the second round of the South Zone C Division Boys’ Basketball Championship.

Serangoon Garden took an early lead, taking the first quarter 7-6. However, an injury to one of their key players, Bryan Chew (#9), seemed to slow Serangoon Garden down.

RI grabbed the opportunity to take the lead in the second quarter to take the first half 19-17. RI used their height advantage to grab many rebounds, restricting Serangoon Garden’s shooting chances.

Serangoon Garden’s Cheng Chong An (#7) was an example of ‘If at first you don’t succeed, try and try again’, when he sank a three-pointer after many tries. However, that was not enough to stop Serangoon Garden from falling to a 33-43 defeat.

RI’s Justin Yeo was the top scorer of the match, sinking a game-high 18 points.

Serangoon Garden’s Swee Zi Heng (#8) impressed with his play. His piercing runs saw him dribbling past defenders with ease, and together with his lay-ups, Zi Heng scored 14 points for his team.

Despite the loss, Zi Heng was happy with the performance of his team.

“We played well. They were our strongest competitor of the group. We fought hard and did not give up,” Zi Heng said.

On his team’s chances of making it to the semi-finals, Zi Heng said: “We hope to reach the semi-finals but we already lost two matches. We will try our best to win the remaining matches.”

Meanwhile, RI captain Jovi Lim (#11) was not pleased with his team’s performance.

“It was not the best that we played. We were very nervous. In our next matches, we must calm down first,” Jovi said.

RI will face Peicai Secondary next, while Serangoon Garden will hope to earn their first win when they meet Saint Andrew’s Secondary. Both games will be held on Monday, July 16th at PESEB.

*Serangoon Garden were wearing Queensway’s white jerseys on that day because they wore the wrong set, and their green jerseys clashed with Raffles’ kit.
