Clementi Sports Hall, Tuesday, July 10, 2012 – Zhenghua Secondary fought hard to hold off Dunearn Secondary 29-26 in a tense encounter in the West Zone C Division Boys’ Basketball Championship.
With both teams rooted to the bottom of Group B with no wins, the teams went into the game fighting hard to at least chalk up a win before exiting the competition. The game was a tight affair, with Zhenghua gaining a slight 13-12, first-quarter lead.
Dunearn paid dearly for their lack of accuracy and errant passes, as Zhenghua dominated the second quarter, taking the first half 21-12. Dunearn stepped up their game to close the gap on their opponents but it was a little too late as they lost 26-29.
Zhenghua’s Kenric Ng (#9) was the top scorer of the game with 11 points. Dunearn’s captain Ng Jing Heng (#7) and vice-captain Dominic Chua (#4) were joint top scorers for their team with 8 points each.
Zhenghua captain Tan Yi Zhang (#8) was happy with the win.
“It was a tough fight against Dunearn but we fought hard,” Yi Zhang said.
Meanwhile, Dunearn’s captain Ng Jing Heng was disappointed with the team’s performance.
“We did not play well. The team was very off-form. We did not communicate well on court,” Jing Heng said.
Both teams hope to improve their performance in next year’s campaign.
When asked about his hopes for the following year, Yi Zhang said: “We hope to make it to Top 4.”
Zhenghua vice-captain Low Qi Hui (#12) agreed and said: “We will work hard to improve our performance.”
Dunearn’s Jing Heng will be moving on to the B Division next year, but he hopes that his juniors would be able to make it to the semi-finals.
