PESEB, Wednesday, July 11, 2012 — Jurong Secondary qualified for the semi-finals of the West Zone C Division Girls’ Volleyball Championship after a 2-0 (25-0, 25-16) win over River Valley High in their Round Two, Group Q match.
Both teams had come into the match with one loss each and whichever team won would progress as runner-up of the group. Jurong applied pressure right at the start as they scored multiple points on their first touch. Jurong amassed a total of 32 points scored from 14 kills and 18 service aces as they obliterated River Valley’s defenses, forcing the latter to commit 19 defensive errors.
Jurong hardly had to break a sweat in the first set, making only one rotation as Nur Adina (Jurong #4) served out the entire set. Adina (Jurong #4) scored eight service aces in the first set alone while Sharelin Sim (Jurong #8) complemented to the scoring streak with four kills. Jurong successfully prevented River Valley from scoring a single point as they seized the set 25-0.
River Valley were down but certainly not beaten as they came back fighting in the second set. Taking advantage of Jurong’s errors, they pulled ahead to lead 6-2. They kept up their morale and showed great fighting spirit as they tried hard to keep Jurong at bay.
Jurong seemed to suddenly encounter a drop in form as they struggled to pull ahead to a decisive lead. The teams were neck and neck with the scores tied at the 9, 13, 14 and 15-point marks before Jurong finally managed to break free from the stalemate.
This time round, River Valley could not make a comeback as they had to settle at watching Jurong extend their lead. Jurong were soon leading 24-15 after a service ace from Adina (Jurong #4), her 15th ace of the match.
River Valley took the next point after an illegal contact over the net by Sharelin (Jurong #8), but the Jurong player subsequently secured the final point with a light tap from the centre.
Jurong will now face Group P leaders Nanyang Girls’ High on Friday while River Valley have been eliminated from the tournament.
