Singapore Basketball Centre, Monday, July 9, 2012 – Woodgrove Secondary thrashed Fuchun Secondary 65-2 in their final group game of the C Division North Zone Girls’ Basketball Championship.

Despite their impressive score in this game, Woodgrove failed to advance to the second round as they had lost their previous two games. Their 1-2 win-loss record placed them third in Group X, while Fuchun, with a 0-3 record, finished last in the four-team group. Nan Chiau (3-0) and Ahmad Ibrahim (2-1) qualified for Round 2 from their group.

Woodgrove’s top scorer was Qairyn (#7), who scored a game high of 16 points, and Fuchun’s only scorer was Ng Shi Min Claudine (#10), with two.

From the first quarter, Woodgrove dominated the game.

Woodgrove tended to press Fuchun at half court, stopping them from advancing to their side of the court. Whenever Fuchun were able to elude Woodgrove’s defenders, their inaccurate shooting prevented them from gaining any points.

Most of the game was played Fuchun half and in the paint.

Whenever a Woodgrove player missed the basket while making a shot, her teammates were always ready to catch the rebound and try for another shot, giving them multiple attempts at scoring.

Asked about what they did well in the game, Woodgrove’s Farisha (#5) and Qairyn (#7) agreed that they were pleased with their team’s teamwork, communication and defense.

Michelle Ng Xin Lan (#8) of Woodgrove added: “We need to improve on our offense. And we need to be able to ba wo (have confidence).”

This is both teams’ final game in the North Zone championship.
