West Zone C Div Vball (Girls): Hua Yi beat Hillgrove in Rd 2 match

PESEB, Friday, July 6, 2012 — Hua Yi Secondary put themselves ahead in qualifying for the semi-finals of the West Zone C Division Volleyball Championship when they beat Hillgrove Secondary 2-0 (25-17, 25-8) in their Round Two, Group P match.

Coming into second round as leaders of their first round group, Hua Yi did not have the best of starts.

Despite getting off to a 6-0 lead, they had to work hard to notch a win in the first set. Hua Yi were plagued by many hit errors at the start and were unable to score a kill until the 15-point mark through a spike off the block by Li Ting (Hua Yi #12).

Hillgrove were able to get themselves on the scoreboard, putting up five kills in the first set. Unfortunately, they had an unprecedented number of errors, committing five service faults and 11 defensive errors.

This allowed Hua Yi to hold on to the advantage, who quickly returned to their winning ways.

With Avery (Hua Yi #2) back on serve, Hua Yi pressured Hillgrove with their serves to pull ahead. Avery had recorded a total of six service aces (three from each set) to contribute significantly to the team’s win.

Hua Yi were soon leading 24-17 after a strong serve by Yuhui (Hua Yi #11). They then sealed the set 25-17 following a defensive error from Hillgrove.

Hua Yi kept up their momentum in the second set and pulled ahead quickly. The team managed to score seven kills while limiting Hillgrove to only one kill. As Hua Yi began to widen the score gap, the Hillgrove players were finding it increasingly difficult to return the former’s serves or spikes.

Hua Yi ultimately sealed the set 25-8 to give themselves a good chance at making the semi-final.

Hillgrove will next play Nanyang Girls’ High on Tuesday July 10. Should they lose the match, both Nanyang and Hua Yi will progress into the semi-finals.
