PESEB, Tuesday, July 3, 2012 – In a one-sided match, Gan Eng Seng School claimed a resounding 63-24 victory over Yuying Secondary.

This is Gan Eng Seng’s third win and Yuying Secondary’s third loss in Group E of the South Zone C Division Boys’ Basketball Championship. Gan Eng Seng are top of Group E and are through to Round 2.

The most significant player of the match was Gan Eng Seng’s team captain, Tan Qi Shun (#9), who had a very simple game plan — receive a pass from any teammate, then coolly drive it through Yuying’s defense and finish off with a layup or jump shot.

Qi Shun danced effortlessly through Yuying’s defense, at one point making a very calm and measured jump shot while surrounded by three Yuying defenders. Qi Shun also excelled at converting free throws. Throughout the match he was unstoppable, and he finished with a game-high 45 points, more than three times that of the next highest-scoring player.

From the start of the match, it became apparent that Yuying were unable to penetrate Gan Eng Seng’s zone defense. With the enormous Alvin Chan (#15) as their centre, Gan Eng Seng made it physically impossible for any of Yuying’s players to get close to the basket, restricting them to mid-range shots.

Yuying did their best to rise to the occasion, with Pang Biao En (#14) alternating between shooting from just inside the three-point line to going for layups and getting fouled, scoring with free throws. In the first two quarters, all of Yuying’s points were put in by Biao En.

However, without a way to get through Gan Eng Seng’s defense, Yuying suffered visibly, at more than one point forced to pass the ball repeatedly around the outside of GESS’s three-point line without being able to make a single shot. Whenever Yuying made a shot that missed, Gan Eng Seng would quickly grab the rebound and pass it to Qi Shun (#9), who would then calmly dribble past the Yuying defense on the way to the basket.

Yuying will next meet Peirce Secondary, who will have to beat Yuying in order to pass through to the second round. The match will be on Thursday, July 5th, 2.15pm, at PESEB.

Gan Eng Seng will play Mayflower Secondary, also on Thursday, July 5th, 2.15pm at PESEB. Gan Eng Seng will pass through to the second round no matter the result, but Mayflower must win if it hopes to do so as well.
