PESEB, Evans Road, Monday, June 25, 2012 — Ang Mo Kio Secondary beat Chong Boon Secondary 2-1 in the South Zone C Division Boys’ Volleyball Championship.

It was a game of one team springing to the lead and stuttering, and the other team seizing the moment for the win. Ang Mo Kio started with some errors but caught up w good net play to take a 3-1 lead. CBS soon found themselves down 6-2.

A trio of unforced errors by Ang Mo Kio let Chong Back back to 6-5 and a smart net decision by the Chong Boon #6 drew them even at 7-7.

Chong Boon continued to keep pace and smart play by their #14 misdirected the Ang Mo Kio defense to keep the score tied at 11-11.

The Chong Boon #9 then made a strong spike to give his team a 13-12 lead and Ang Mo Kio started to faltered, forcing their coach to call a timeout to rally the boys while leading 17-14.

Chong Boon came out firing but the Ang Mo Kio #13 answered with intelligent all-round play. Ang Mo Kio then called a second timeout at 22-15.

The Chong Boon #7’s strong spike gave his team the lead at 24-17 before a final error by Ang Mo Kio gave Chong Boon the first set, 25-17.

Ang Mo Kio came out blazing to take a 5-1 lead in the second set behind the good play of their #15 and #13. However, Chong Boon rode the powerful spikes of their #9 to tie it up at 6-6.

Chong Boon then survived a long rally to lead 8-6 before over-eager spiking by their #9 saw them fall back 11-10. The Ang Mo Kio #16 started to calm down and provided good distribution to help his team lead 14-11.

Chong Boon refused to go away, keeping close at 19-18. Sensing the momentum slipping, the Chong Boon coach called a timeout but Ang Mo Kio still pushed ahead to lead 21-18 with their #1 making well-placed spikes.

Chong Boon mounted a final push to get to 23-21 but Ang Mo Kio sensed the chance and closed out the set with a smart play at the net to win 25-21.

Chong Boon seemed to still be suffering from game one jitters and were tense as Ang Mo Kio pulled away to lead 7-3. Words of encouragement by the Chong Boon coach saw them calm down but Ang Mo Kio showed a larger variety of mid-court moves to pull away to 12-5.

Chong Boon then scored three straight points and the Ang Mo Kio coach called a timeout. Consecutive bad decisions at the net by Ang Mo Kio had let Chong Boon creep back to 11-13.

Ang Mo Kio changed some players and cotinued to pull ahead while the Chong Boon #7 and #6 started to vary their net moves as their team closed to 15-17.

Long rallies seemed to favour Chong Boon and they trailed only by one at 17-18. Chong Boon then took the lead on an Ang Mo Kio error at 22-21 but their opponents came back with a flurry of spikes to lead 24-22. Ang Mo Kio eventually wrapped up the third set 25-22 to win 2-1.
