Clementi Sports Hall, Monday, April 2, 2012 — Nanyang Girls’ High rode on a superior 17-6 first quarter lead to cruise to a 42-19 win over National Junior College in a first round National B Division Girls’ Basketball Championship group game.

Yet, despite being unbeaten so far in the competition, the West Zone B division girls’ champions were surprisingly made to work hard by their less illustrious opponents.

National Junior College displayed their tenacity with a stifling full court man-to-man press in the second quarter and it paid dividends as Nanyang only managed four points in that quarter alone.

However, NJC’s profligacy in their attacks meant that they could not capitalize on their opponents mistakes. The quarter ended in a low-scoring 4-2, in Nanyang’s favour.

The second half continued in the same vein as NJC’s defense managed to limit Nanyang’s offense, yet their players failed to convert most of the chances that were presented.

Nanyang’s forward #5 then showed the way, including a 3-pointer in the third quarter. She eventually ended with a team-high 15 points.

Nanyang’s win meant that both North Vista Secondary and themselves advance into the second round, with the final match against North Vista a fight for the first and second placing in the group.
