CHIJ Secondary (Toa Payoh), Thursday, March 29, 2012 — Raffles Girls’ School beat Nanyang Girls’ High 34-26 to qualify for Round 2 of the National B Division Netball Championship. RGS had started their national campaign with a shock 31-34 loss to Greenview Secondary but made up for it with wins over Anderson (45-29) and Nanyang.

RGS, the South Zone champions, played out a heart-stopping match against Greenview who finished fourth in the East Zone. Greenview managed to hold on to their lead in the final quarter to seal a famous win.

However, that roller coaster ride in that group did not end there. In their subsequent match, Greenview lost to Nanyang Girls’ High by 17 goals (35-52). This meant the game between RGS needed to beat Nanyang Girls’ High to stay in the championship while Nanyang were already assured of qualification.

RGS took advantage of Nanyang’s shooting errors to take a small lead. However, Nanyang fought back hard in the second quarter and stunned RGS by not only closing the gap but securing a two-point lead.

It was neck and neck in the third quarter, with Nanyang’s lead reduced to just one point by the start of the fourth quarter. In the 4th quarter, Nanyang’s shooting began to fail them once again and RGS seized the opportunity. The RGS goal shooter put in a few incredibly long shots from the turnover won by their defenders which drew much cheering from the crowd.

In the final quarter, RGS proved once again that they had what it took to continue in the nationals by wrapping up an eight-point 34-26 win at the final whistle.

Besides Nanyang and RGS, the other schools that qualified for Round 2 are Singapore Sports School, St Hilda’s Secondary, Nan Hua High, CHIJ St Theresa’s Convent, Dunman Secondary and CHIJ Secondary (Toa Payoh).
